Stand is located on northwest side of large drainage flanking South Chalone Peak to the south. Area is diverse in substrate size and vegetation, dotted with pines and large rock formations. Some evidence of large mammal (i.e. pack mule / horse?) in recent past. Plot is located on east-facing slope and tucked between a few larger rock formations. Rhyolitic ground is very gravelly, yet even, perhaps due to stabilizing effect of Selaginella bigelovii. Large mammal droppings in plot (ie. pack mule / horse?).
